Born in 1949 and raised in Minnesota, I became a sociology professor, partly to understand societal things that cause suffering.

It has been a wonderful career; I’ve taught at a number of universities including Stanford, and my current home, NYU. I’ve taught about and written on gender inequality.

I had the honor in 2018 of being elected to the National Academy of Sciences. I came to the practice in Tucson, Arizona while teaching Sociology at the U. of Arizona, seeking to find more serenity in my life.

The practice has made me more peaceful, in compassionate, and happy, so I want to share it with others. I’m probably in the last few years of my career as a professor and in a period of discovery of what comes next.
