Hello! My name’s Malin. I’m so pleased to be here.
Firstly, I need to tell you that I’m a big nerd. Reading the rest of this bio will make that obvious. I work with beginning meditators and advanced meditators alike, so don’t let the nerdery dissuade you if you think we’ll be a good fit, regardless of your experience level.
I’m very direct. Sometimes I’m too direct! If you want a straight answer I’ll give it to you. I’m also patient. An accomplishment of mine: I’ve taught several ADHD 6-year-olds how to read, so it’s probably not possible for you to ask me too many questions or to bother me by being distractible.
On that note, I love quirks, idiosyncrasies, and unique challenges. Anything you might think makes you strange will probably make you a favourite client/student of mine. Also, have you got challenges with mindfulness practice that you’re not sure anybody else has? Perfect. Bring ’em.
One of the things that I do as a mindfulness trainer is help people with executive dysfunction apply mindfulness in order to better manage it. This includes symptoms like procrastination, poor focus, sensory and emotional overwhelm, and restlessness. If any of these are things that you struggle with, whether often or occasionally, rest assured that I can help you work with them, and that they don’t need to be any barrier to a deep mindfulness practice. I know that for a fact, because they’re all symptoms I have personally.
I’ve got over 15 years of meditation experience, and I’ve been practicing in the UM system since 2022. I’m eclectic in the Buddhist traditions and teachers who have influenced me, so it may be best to summarize that I have a very analytical style that favours insight and sensory clarity. If you are curious about the way your mind works and/or would like to explore things like “emptiness” or “no-self” in your own experience, I’ve found I’m well suited to assist with that. I can also help you develop spontaneity, “doing without doing”, or “Zen Bounce” – which you may find exceptionally liberating if you’re the same kind of over-thinker that I am. 😉
I would describe myself as a Buddhist Atheist. I am absorbed in Buddhist practice and culture, particularly but not exclusively Theravada, and I have a skeptical, analytical mindset with a bias towards the western scientific consensus. I’m also quite happy and enthusiastic about working with practitioners from different perspectives and traditions to my own.
I’m engaged in the local community, and I study and sit retreats with the Saskatoon Insight Meditation Community and the Saskatoon Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery. My teacher locally is Jeanne Corrigal, a lineage holder in the Theravada tradition who trained at IMS and Spirit Rock.
I’ll note finally that while I am well-read and practiced in a variety of traditions, the one in which I am certified to teach is Unified Mindfulness.
If you’re interested in working with me, or if there’s anything at all additional that you need to know in order to make the decision, please do reach out. I’d love to hear from you.
